There are those who are content to live with mass-produced goods and those who want much more.
More from everything that surrounds them. They are people who are not afraid of departing from the norm and are not shy about embracing good design. A high level of craftsmanship is mandatory and rarity is always desired.
If you fall into the "more" category and are searching for rare, unique and expertly crafted solid wood furniture
tailor-made to your exact wants and needs, then you are in the right place. Please browse these web pages for a sampling of my designs and as always, if you have any questions, I welcome your call.
Multiple design elements take this incredible writing desk to a new level of style. First, gentle curves front and back subtly suggest the shape of a butterfly, hence the name Farfalla. Second, the shapely curved legs are set at a 45 degree angle to the drawer compartment, following the contour of the top. Finally, the top and drawer compartment in stunning Goncalo Alves provide amazing contrast with the sexy Black Walnut legs. As in all my desk designs, the front is constructed from one single piece of wood, allowing the grain to flow perfectly across the drawer front. This piece is available in any wood species desired. Dimensions: 43" wide x 21.75" deep and 30" tall. Please call for further information.
A design inspired by the magnificent Gateway Arch of St. Louis, “Passaggio” symbolizes one of the very definitions of the word passage: “the process of transition from one state to another.” The design welcomes you embrace it for what it is, yet invites you to go beyond what the eye sees and imagine what lies beyond its defining arch. The piece is a Paul Carlino original, hand-crafted from highly-figured Curly Cherry. The legs, arch and drawer pull are crafted from Hard Maple done in a black satin finish. There is only one available, along with the matching chair. The piece awaits its sale to one deserving customer who is looking for a unique and rare example of functional art.
Named in memory of my Mom, Norma Rose Carlino, this positively stunning Cherry writing desk incorporates my signature arched front leg design. The piece is certain to become the focal point of any room in your home, be it public space such as a living room or family room, or more private space such as a home office or bedroom. The desk top is solid curly cherry and the aprons, upper drawer enclosures, back piece and drawer fronts are all crafted in solid Cherry, finished in a medium-tone stain and multiple coats of satin clear finish. The legs are solid hard Maple, finished in a black satin top coat. The small drawers on the desk top are perfect for smaller items and the central drawer under the top has ample room for a folded laptop, tablet or important books and papers. The legs are easily removed to reduce the risk of damage when moving. This is a popular design for good reason. It is a statement piece capable of transforming an entire room. In memory of my late mother, Norma Rose Carlino, I present my “Norma Rose” writing desk with matching chair, crafted from sensational, heavily figured Curly Cherry with Hard Maple Legs. There are many design elements that make this set an exceptional exercise in functional art: tapered tops of both desk and chair. Subtle top to bottom tapers of the backs. The carefully crafted desk front, flowing the curly cherry figure across the entire area. And of course, my signature curved legs in contrasting black Hard Maple. If Mom were still here with us, I know she would approve. I would have loved to present the piece to her as my gift for her 100th birthday in January 2020.
This shapely writing desk or table for two is the evolution of my very popular “Urn” desk design. Crafted from Ambrosia Maple, Curly Cherry, Black Walnut and Bubinga, the top is suggestive of the shape of a wine carafe and the highly figured Curly Cherry base conforms exactly to that shape. The incredible natural grain, figure and colors of the hardwoods are accentuated by the multiple coats of clear satin finish. This is a beautiful and unique statement piece that will be talked about by friends and family for years to come. It would be my pleasure to customize this piece to your exact specifications. I have been designing and building wood furniture for over three decades. I am completely self-taught, with no formal
training in furniture design or woodworking. While I do hold a BA degree, I never undertook any formal course work in the field. However, my studies did leave me with a profound appreciation for the arts and the creative process.
I started out small, creating pine pieces with very modest tools, purely as a hobbyist. As time went on, I was able to acquire more sophisticated woodworking tools and the knowledge and skills that allowed me to elevate my game.
Ultimately, I started designing and building more complex pieces, crafting them from premium hardwoods.
I discovered there was a market for my solid hardwood creations and suddenly, woodworking became a profession.
To this day, I continue to learn new and different processes and my style continues to evolve.
I do not see that changing in my lifetime. The one constant throughout: my obsession with quality craftsmanship.
I am proud to say that every one of my pieces is hand-made by me and only me, one at a time, in my woodworking studio in Upstate New York. From the initial design sketch to lumber selection to applying the very last coat of finish,
every single task is performed by me personally. This insures an unmatched level of quality control.
Recognizing that some of my designs might not be for everyone, I am more than happy to consider custom requests.
I have done many custom pieces for clients and have truly enjoyed working with them every step of the way
until they got exactly what they wanted. I would be honored to do the same for you.
